Embolus - something bad moving through bloodstream (fat, air, clot, plastic, biofilm)

Embolism - vessel blocked by embolus ➔ ischemia

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) - thrombus originates vein, can ➔ pulmonary embolism

Arterial embolism - usually originates from cardiac origin (a-fib) ➔ stroke

Paradoxical embolism - septal defect allows a VTE to move into arterial system
